[Lego Mindstorms]

I came across Lego Mindstorms during my Masters at Sussex where we made simple Braitenberg vehicles out of Lego that could follow a light source or stop in the dark. It seemed like a lot of fun and a good opportunity to quickly build something useful without having to concentrate on electronics, so I decided to buy my own NXT kit after I got my degree.

Although one day I would like to be programming real robots (preferably many of them that are small and insect-like), I consider Mindstorms as a good middle-step between pure simulation and actual robotics.
